M4 Sherman

M4 Sherman

Medium Tank · USA

Quick, reliable and everywhere. The gyro-stabilised 75 shoots well on the move and its HE is excellent, but its AP struggles against heavy armour from the front: flank, and work as a pack.

History

The Medium Tank M4 Sherman was the backbone of the US Army and, through Lend-Lease, of the British and other Allied armies. Around 49,000 were built from 1942 to 1945 across many factories and sub-variants. It was not the most heavily armed or armoured tank of the war, but it was reliable, easy to maintain, quick to repair and available in huge numbers. Its 75 mm M3 gun fired a very good high-explosive shell, and a gyro-stabiliser helped the gunner keep the gun on target while moving.

The Sherman first fought with the British at El Alamein in late 1942 and with US forces in Tunisia, including the Kasserine Pass battles of February 1943. By 1944 its 75 mm gun struggled against the front of the Panther and Tiger, which led to the 76 mm Shermans and the British Firefly. The game's Sherman is a welded-hull, mid production M4 with the 75 mm gun in the M34A1 mount, the type the US 4th Armored Division took to Arracourt and the 10th Armored took to Bastogne in 1944.

In Armor Heads

Compared with the other 34 WW2 vehicles, it is top 5 for turret / gun traverse speed (#2 of 35).

The penetration threshold is the thinnest zone multiplier the shell gets through: zones below it stop the shell (10 % damage for AP, 20 % for HE). See how the numbers work.

Matchups (AP against the hull front, square-on, under 100 m)

  • Its AP gets through the hull front of 19 of the other 34 vehicles. It is stopped by: Tiger I, Panther, T-34/76, T-34-85, Sherman Firefly, M26 Pershing, Tiger II, IS-2, Churchill VII, KV-1, SU-100, Jagdpanther, ISU-152, M32 TRV, Jagdpanzer 38 Hetzer.
  • 18 of the other 34 vehicles' AP get through its hull front. Safe from the front against: M3A1 Stuart, Panzer II Luchs, Panzer III Ausf. L, T-34/76, Cromwell, Churchill VII, KV-1, M32 TRV, M24 Chaffee, Sd.Kfz. 250/9, T-70M, T-60, SU-76M, M3 Lee, 75 mm GMC M3, Stuart V "Honey".
  • Sides, rears and roofs are thinner on every vehicle; see each page's zone table.

Secondary weapons and equipment

  • Roof machine gun: .50 cal (M2 Browning), the vehicle's own modelled gun on its turret, 9 rounds/s, 2.5 damage per round, overheats after 48 rounds. It elevates to 70° and can shoot down recon planes.
  • Smoke: 2 salvos, each recharges in 40 s.

Mobility

  • Running gear: tracks (pivot turns).
  • Top speed 38.6 km/h on roads, 18.1 km/h off-road (47 %), reverse 5 km/h, acceleration 3.3 m/s².
  • Turn rate 33°/s (20°/s at top speed). Mass 30,300 kg. Engine start 2.5 s.

Special ability (B)

Artillery: an eight-shell barrage on any point within 1,000 m, 8 s after red smoke marks it; the shells hit tank roofs and wreck buildings. Ready 90 s after the round goes live, once per round; another use costs 400 credits.
