Cromwell

Cruiser Tank · Britain
The fastest medium on the field. Its 75 mm is a dual-purpose gun with good HE but weak AP: use the speed to reach the flanks and the rear, where every gun gets through.

History
The Cromwell (A27M) was the British cruiser tank of the Normandy campaign. Its Rolls-Royce Meteor engine, a derated Merlin aero engine, made it one of the fastest tanks of the war at about 60 km/h. The Mk IV shown in the game carried the 75 mm ROQF gun, which fired the same ammunition as the American 75 and had a useful HE round.
Cromwells equipped the armoured reconnaissance regiments and the 7th Armoured Division, the "Desert Rats". At Villers-Bocage on 13 June 1944 the Cromwells of the 4th County of London Yeomanry were caught in the town by Wittmann's Tigers. The Cromwell's speed and low profile suited the bocage, but its gun could not defeat the front of a Tiger or Panther.
In Armor Heads
Compared with the other 34 WW2 vehicles, it is top 5 for off-road speed (#5 of 35); top 5 for damage per minute (#4 of 35).
Survivability
- Hit points: 910. Damage taken multiplier: 1.07 (effective HP 850).
- Track repair: 7 s.
| Zone | Damage multiplier (lower = thicker) | Raw shell damage to destroy through this zone |
|---|---|---|
| Hull front | 0.74 | 718 |
| Hull side | 1.05 | 506 |
| Hull rear | 1.32 | 403 |
| Roof | 1.58 | 336 |
| Turret front | 0.68 | 782 |
| Turret side | 0.74 | 718 |
| Turret rear | 1.3 | 409 |
Main gun
- Mount: turret, 360° traverse at 32°/s.
- Elevation +20° / depression -10°, at 22°/s.
- Reload: 4.2 s.
- Damage per minute (AP): 4,000.
- Accuracy: 0.075° dispersion when settled, aim time 1.52 s, move bloom 0.054.
- Gunner's sight: No. 50, 3x (binoculars 6x / 10x / 15x).
| Shell | Type | Damage | Splash | Blast radius | Muzzle velocity | Penetration threshold | Rounds | Crew shock |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Armour Piercing | AP | 280 | 20 | 2.5 m | 619 m/s | 0.65 | 21 | - |
| High Explosive | HE | 182 | 140 | 5.8 m | 604 m/s | 1 | 11 | 1 |
The penetration threshold is the thinnest zone multiplier the shell gets through: zones below it stop the shell (10 % damage for AP, 20 % for HE). See how the numbers work.
Matchups (AP against the hull front, square-on, under 100 m)
- Its AP gets through the hull front of 18 of the other 34 vehicles. It is stopped by: Tiger I, M4 Sherman, Panther, T-34/76, T-34-85, Sherman Firefly, M26 Pershing, Tiger II, IS-2, Churchill VII, KV-1, SU-100, Jagdpanther, ISU-152, M32 TRV, Jagdpanzer 38 Hetzer.
- 29 of the other 34 vehicles' AP get through its hull front. Safe from the front against: Panzer II Luchs, M32 TRV, Sd.Kfz. 250/9, T-70M, T-60.
- Sides, rears and roofs are thinner on every vehicle; see each page's zone table.
Secondary weapons and equipment
- No working roof machine gun.
- Smoke: 2 salvos, each recharges in 40 s.
Mobility
- Running gear: tracks (pivot turns).
- Top speed 52 km/h on roads, 29.1 km/h off-road (56 %), reverse 10.4 km/h, acceleration 5.4 m/s².
- Turn rate 51°/s (31°/s at top speed). Mass 28,000 kg. Engine start 3 s.
Special ability (B)
Recon Plane: a recon plane flies a line you draw on the map (up to 800 m) and spots every enemy within 75 m of it for 10 s. Ready 60 s after the round goes live, once per round; another use costs 250 credits.
Where it appears
Players can take it on all seven WW2 maps, on either team. The AI fields it on:
- Villers-Bocage 1944, Blue (Allied side): 3x in an 7-vehicle line-up (first at position 1).
